Well, I persevered and got this MT "personal publishing system" working last night.

For anyone else interested in using the Movable Type blogger, here's a hint - be sure that your ftp server copies files up to your web server with the same capitalization as the original files. I would estimate of all of the troubleshooting that I did while trying to get the blogger to work, the biggest problem was that the case of the filenames matters and most of the files lost all of their capitalization during the ftp upload.

Also - from the movabletype web page, there is a support forum. I was able to go through the messages on the support forum and answer most of the questions that I had - remember, practically everyone has run into similar installation problems!
