05.11.2002 :: quick status
Some knitting over the past few days. Working on finishing the Opal socks and nothing else, knitting wise. Spending lots of time learning about Cascading Style Sheets and testing various implementations. It takes alot of tweaking to get things right. So, not too much going on.
Took my mom to lunch today at The Inn at Turner's Mill. I've eaten there so many times and have never had a meal that was not absolutely delicious. At lunch they make delicious quiches. Today's was spinach and mushroom in a chardonnay butter sauce. mmmm...delightful.
More grass-cutting news
(since my lawn is growing about .5" per day, I'm kind of obsessing over what the most efficient, yet pleasant method is for getting the grass cut down to a manageable length. Realistically, because of the rain, fertilizer and moderate weather, I need to cut my lawn about every 5 days. And it's not a job that I absolutely love. obsess. obsess.obsess.)
At one end of the grass-cutting spectrum is the most desirable automated lawn mower robot thing that I referred to a couple days ago. At the other end is the old-fashioned reel-mower. I bought a reel mower last weekend because I like the idea that it's much quieter and doesn't use gasoline. The few reviews that I found on Amazon and Epinions were encouraging. I used it to cut the front side of my lawn the other day. I really want to like this mower. It is quiet and is more pleasant to use than the gasoline powered Toro that I've had for the past several years. The only problem is that it seems to miss quite a few random blades of grass. I actually went over the whole lawn twice and there are still many stray blades of grass which didn't get cut. I'm not giving up though. More research (perhaps I need to adjust something?) and more real-world testing to come before giving up on this guy.

My sister just got a spendy Gardena mower and she loves it! She said it's so light (mainly constructed of plastic) that she can lift it with one hand!

We have a oldfashioned pushmower which we love, but we only have a small amount of backyard to mow (maybe 300 square feet). You can adjust them... we've also found that it's easier to mow without the grasscatcher attached, but then you have to rake (or leave it, if you can stand to). You'll never get a golf course lawn with a pushmower -- it's just not their style. Every now and then I go at the long tufts & edges with a weed whacker.
Another approach is to consider a less grass intensive yard. There are lots of groundcovers that don't need mowing at all, very little water or amendments and are prettier than grass. After years of wanting to, we pulled out our front lawn this year. We planted gazania... there's one older pic up on the website. I'll get a new one up soon... it's really filled in since planting in early Spring.
Finally, you could take the radical approach of letting some of it "go wild". Sometimes this is referred to as "meadowing". There are lots of ways to do this so that it won't look like your house is derelict.
Think about how much more you'd be able to knit, if you never had to mow again!

First, I didn't realize that you were working on that Luskentyre Sweater, yours looks wonderful!
The lawnmower saga is amusing to read about - I wish I had a lawn, I love to mow and have to live vicariously by cutting the grass at my parent's house.
