09.13.2003 :: Pure and Simple

pure and simple

Melissa kicked off a great conversation the other day while reflecting on how a woman becomes "invisible" as she ages. The invisibility can occur for many different reasons and sometimes it's even desirable. I often forget that I "look a mess" because I've just been exploring new nature trails or playing in a stream with my dogs. Deep joy and satisfaction drown out self-consciousness and the resulting peace is a beautiful thing.

The artwork above is by the illustrator Woodleigh Marx Hubbard. I ran across her site by accident and found that this picture captured what I had been trying to express in words in Melissa's comments. On the sites home and bio pages there is additional information about the artist. Her illustrative goals are pretty close to my life goals:

"My purpose in illustrating is to match the exuberance, delight, and vitality of children..."

I love the illustration! I have a friend who is a children's book illustrator and she also captures many wonderful qualities about kids. She just had her third. I wonder if it will affect her work now. It is definitely easier to appreciate the "exuberance, delight and vitality of children" when you don't live with them 24/7. :) Great dog pics, too! (And I deflect that question every day . .. "can we get a dog? Pleeeeaaaassseeeee?" Like I need a fourth child! ;)

Hi Mary!
I feel a new sisterhood forming: Invisible Women of the World. United in frump and contentment.

On another note: I have a feeling half the continent will be soaking wet after your dog shakes off that stream water. :eek:

I'm so glad I found you again. I missed your blog :)
Thanks for sharing the illustration with us. Melissa's right - we are a sisterhood.
