10.28.2003 :: Finished Skein

This is the finished skein of mohair/wool that was started in this post. The fiber is from Fantom Farm and was a dream to spin.
Update! Here's a little more info about this yarn. It has about 19 wpi. The skein weight is around 4 ounces and I'd estimate that it took about three to four hours to spin. The colors are dyed over a relatively dark grey wool and I think it was just about the easiest fiber that I've ever spun.
Daphne asked how I get the spin so consistent. The answer is that I over-attenuate the fiber (and not on purpose). I'll have an idea of the thickness that I would like the yarn to be and it generally ends up at about half of that weight. For example, I was going to try to make a heavier single with this fiber, but then as I was spinning towards that weight, the single inevitably got thinner because of my desire to make it even. That's the only way that I can explain it. It does come out nice and even, but the trade off is that it's not at the weight that I had in mind. At this point it hasn't been critical since I haven't been spinning for a specific finished project.
Tonight I'm going to start spinning up some of the indigo moon fiber. I'm looking forward to it!

It's called a single, Miss Kerspin. ;) Hehe..just giving you a hard time.
Mary, how on EARTH (or anywhere else for that matter) do you get your singles to come out so nice and balanced? I can't do it for the life of me! :(

Nice work! Really even and so pretty!
Hey, what's the verdict on Luskentyre??? I have a shetland UFO that I thought would make good oven mitts..or something else after I felt it and then decide...hee hee!
I think you should patiently rip and then work it back up! good luck! g

Such beautiful work... it would make any knitter drool!

Daphne, you can't get it to come out so "nice and balanced" because you're no longer SINGLE. *teehee*

Kerstin - your logic makes sense! I'm very good at being single, so it follows that I'm also good at spinning singles! Now what does that say about those risqué spinners who are really good at spinning three-ply yarn?

Tiffany - It seems to make my dogs drool as well!
I'm wondering how many bonks on the head by a spinning flyer it's going to take before my dogs figure out that close to the wheel is not a good place for their heads?!

Wow, lovely. Another close up and a swatch, please.

Mary! I dare not venture an answer on the three-ply question. I will probably only master the two-ply. It makes me wonder about Claudia, though. ;)

Mary, that's such a nice skein...way more even that I can spin it, although I don't obsess overly much about that....
And I'm an EXCELLENT three-ply spinner. I'll let your little imaginations ponder that.....

I keep coming back to look at your skein - stalker! I have used a handspindle and am interested in moving onto the wheel. I am going to take some spinning classes in March to get a feel for it before I invest in a wheel.
I have a few questions that I hope, hope, hope you will answer ;)
How long have you been spinning?
What kind of wheel do you use?
How did you make your big start?
- did you take a class/ have a teacher/ or are you self taught?
