11.17.2003 :: Swatch

Here's the swatch knit from the yarn that I spun in the last entry.
so soft, not scratchy at all
I'm so happy to report that I was successful in spinning a heavy worsted weight yarn. Some may even say that it's bulky - just over 3 stitches per inch (using my oh-so-professional method of measuring against a 3"x5" index card, because I can never find a tape measure when I actually need one). The three inch side and the five inch side are both reporting the same information.

Now for the mittens...I think I'll use the pattern from Ann Budd's book.

so how did you spin it? lots of twist, not too much twist? short color runs?

Very short color runs. It was a layered bat and I really broke it up into lots of little pieces - some where single color, some with two colors and some with three. I'd say that the twist was about average to a little bit loose. Now that I've washed it and wrapped it into a ball, it's definitely relaxed and very softly spun - like much of my spinning - mostly by pure chance!

the 3x5 card is ingenious!

I have a plaid couch and the space between 2 red stripes on the arm is about 2 inches, so I use that to get my gauge in a pinch.

And I love that swatch--the colors remind me of your easter egg dyed skein--are they similar?

Very nice yarn! I love the softness of the pastels...and your resourcefulness to use an index card!

Not that there is anything wrong with spinning-by-chance, hmmm? That's what I do and that's why I like it! I'm definitely hitting Indigo Moon hard at the next fiber festival. So soft, so luscious....
