12.01.2003 :: Is that smoke that I smell?
You know the old saying, "Dinner's ready when the fire alarm goes off"? Well, people often think that I'm just joking when I say that this axiom describes my mom's cooking, but I now have photographic evidence.
Exhibit One:

My mom is showing off her:
a) topographic representation of the Hawaiin lava flows
b) topographic representation of my recently black-topped driveway
c) sweet potatos with excessive amounts of marshmallow topping in a casserole dish that was placed inches from the top of the oven
Because I know you want a closer look!
Let's just say that I was invited to a cookout at my mom's house one summer evening. I arrived at the house to find a melted gas grill (imagine cheap tupperware coming out of the dishwasher) and everyone settling down after a visit from the fire department.
Really, though, dinner was yummy!

Oh, just scrape off the top, it'll be fine! (My mom was good for burnt toast a majority of the time. Scrape, scrape, scrape. She's a good cook it's just that the timing of the toast is a bit tricky. teehee)

HAHAHAHAHA! Kudos to Mom!
Your mom and I have something in common! And anyways, I always like my marshmallows charcoaled!

Oh my! I just spent T'giving with the in-law's and your mother topped them! Looks like she has a good sense of humor. Love her smile!

Meh! It's just like toasting marshmallows at a campfire. There's always one kid that burns them. But when you pull off the burnt exterior, in the middle it's still yummy!
Hope your holiday was wonderful!

Ha! Looking forward to my dad pulling the same trick at Christmas dinner! Happens every year. Wouldn't be Christmas if the Flaming Yams didn't appear!

Ande - You really made me laugh! I should check my mom's recipe box and see if she has an official name for this recipe, if not, I'll definitely propose that she use the name Flaming Yams.

Mary,
Now I didnt actually see the movie (just the previews), but that casserole looks like a scene out of Robin Williams' "What dreams may come". Mmmm
