01.11.2004 :: Cabled Homespun Scarf

pink, pink, PINK!
There is a lady (bizyhands) on ebay who spins the most amazing yarns from hand-dyed rovings. These yarns are so gorgeous and reasonably priced, that I have made several impulse purchases. What to do, what to do with these beautiful yarns? I thought that a scarf would be perfect - the basic idea being to just knit the whole skein from end to end and not waste a single precious inch of it. The pattern is quite simple and was inspired by a scarf that Max knit from a Noro pattern.

Cabled Homespun Scarf I designed this scarf for use with hand-dyed, hand spun yarn. Dont feel limited by my choice of yarn, as Im sure it will have a unique character in any type of yarn.

This pattern is based on a DK weight yarn that would yield a gauge of about 6 stitches per inch in stockinette stitch. My scarf, using the pattern as described, had a finished width of about seven inches. Add or subtract sections of eleven stitches to achieve the desired width based on the yarn that you are using. I think I used size US5 needles. Use your favorites for the weight of yarn that you choose! Cast on 66 stitches (add 11 stitches for each additional cable. The correct number of stitches will always be a multiple of 11.) Kbl = knit through back of loop (a twisted stitch. Occurs only on right side rows) C4F = move 4 stitches to cable needle, hold cable needle to front of work, k4 from left needle, k4 from cable needle. Row One(right side row): k4, p1, kbl1, p1 * k8, p1, kbl1, p1 * repeat five times, k4. Row Two: p4, k1, p1, k1, * p8, k1, p1, k1* repeat five times, p4. Row Three: repeat row One Row Four: repeat row Two Row Five: k4, p1, kbl1, p1 * C4F, p1, kbl1, p1 * repeat five times, k4. Row Six: repeat row Two Row Seven: repeat row One Row Eight: repeat row Two Repeat all eight rows until you run out of yarn or reach the desired length! (p.s. if anyone finds an error or problem with the pattern let me know and I'll make the necessary corrections)

Beautiful scarf, Mary. I loved cabled scarves, but I have this "thing" about a two-sided garment being, well, two sided. I took this class from Lily Chin titled "Reversible Cables" and would be more than happy to teach you the technique. I do, after all, owe you BIG TIME.

aha! bizyhands--knew that name sounded familiar...after visiting ebay, I realized that I've been in 3 bidding wars over her yarn (I lost everytime and I was sniping too.)
it's lovely stuff!
