06.28.2004 :: Fleece Progress

corriedale wool preparation

Here's an example of the results that I've been getting from the corriedale fleece that I ordered. The top is a little puff of cleaned and carded wool. The next bunch down is the clean wool, uncarded. The bottom is the raw wool.

I've been making slow progress on getting the wool clean, but it's at least measurable by this point - I'm about halfway through the box, though it does continue to grow as it's loosened up, so I may not be as close to finishing up as I'd like to think.

Yesterday I was able to visit the Lake Farmpark Fiberfest for just a few hours. This is a very small festival, but there were some interesting fiber and tools to be investigated. I did some test spinning on the Womack electric spinner, all while getting the softest, sweetest sell by Jerry Womack, the guy that builds them. This device is on my list of "presents that I'll get for myself". Maybe for this Christmas? My next birthday?

I also bought some angora/wool blend roving from the Womack's. Katy pre-drafted one of the rovings shortly after I arrived home. I would say that one of the nice things about rovings that are made out of blends of fibers is that they tend to hide the dog and cat hairs that get added in after Katy's forays into fiber preparation. You'd think that I would learn to put this stuff up in a safe place immediately after I get in the door.

The last thing that bought was an 8 ounce batt of wool that is undyed and heathery light brown in color. I plan on dyeing this to see how it differs from the results that I get when dyeing bright white wool.
