07.07.2004 :: Yarn and puppies

blues, purples and greens

Another quick dye job using the crockpot. The colors of this "dye lot" were really hard to photograph. I used deep jewel tones. There's a little highlight of pure magenta and I'm not sure if I like it or not. I'll do a knit swatch to see if it's a nice addition or an annoying distraction.

Although all three skeins were dyed in the same crockpot and I tried to apply the dye in the same pattern on each skein, the skeins show a relatively wide variation in color crispness. I didn't track which skein was on the bottom and which was on the top, but there is one skein where the colors are very crisp and intense and the other two are more muted. My guess is that the crisply colored skein was on the top layer in the crockpot.

The results from this dyeing session indicate that the variation in coloring within the crockpot is probably better suited for roving. That way the color variations can be spread out in the spinning process and more evenly distributed. Of course, these three skeins are close enough that they would probably be fine together, though as with most hand-dyed, the skeins will have to be alternated on a regular basis.

I currently don't have any specific plans for any of the yarns and rovings that I've been working on - I'm mostly just curious about the dyeing process and really interested in the dyeing results. Although, the pile of finished dyed goods is starting to get kind of tall!

And last but not least... The two little doggies are looking for some snacks.

Katy has a big head!

Mary, your yarns are just DELICICOUS! I can't let myself get into spinning and dyeing. I'd have no time to KNIT. and that is my true love, knitting.

Your entry with the beautiful crockpot-ted skeins and your beautiful little doggies has made me smile from ear to ear--thank you! And pass the peanutbutter pup biscuits!

I agree Mary.... I think the Crockpot dyeing is much better for roving. Roving is so much more forgiving in that you can split it apart and mixup the different "dyelots".

They look very pretty. Sweet pooch photo.

"Although, the pile of finished dyed goods is starting to get kind of tall!"

I feel your pain . :)

Your dyeing is most excellent! Your colors are wonderful. I usually dye small batches of yarn in the oven in a big roasting pan. I can get good matching results on the skeins that way. The crockpot is always calling, though, isn't it?

Cute doggins, too!

Perhaps you could work out a gorgeous hand dyed yarn for doggie snacks trade ;)
I personally love the little touch of magenta, but you never know until you KNIT it up....

Mary -- your hand-dyed yarn is really beautiful! You have a terrific eye for complementary colors. I love the puppy pic -- I have definitely seen that expression in my house!

Well, I was going to tell you how nice the yarn looked, but I see several others beat me to it! :-)

Beautiful dye job, lady. Those doggies of yours kill me. They look like they could take a limb or two off. Not that I'm scared or anything. :) Just teasin', they look like sweethearts. Enjoy your weekend, Mary!
