08.29.2004 :: Inconvenience

ouch.jpg

Yes, that's a picture of my left hand in a splint. I crashed and burned on some slippery rocks while running in the park last week and the ER doctor thinks that I have an avulsion fracture. What that means is that a little piece of bone was pulled off with the damaged tendons around my thumb. He's not sure if there are one or two injuries, which is why I'm going to see an orthopedic surgeon this coming week.

More than anything else, this is just a terrible inconvenience. I've tried to do a little bit of knitting - a swatch, done by throwing the yarn with my right hand. My tension is really off, so I don't want to work on any existing projects. I can't really spin either, though I haven't experimented with any alternative techniques that might allow it. zzzz...boring! I'm sorry to say that I won't have too many interesting updates coming for quite a while!

So, just for the heck of it, here's a picture of Katy doing her imitation of a pig wallowing in the muck. She has the uncanny ability of being able to find the ickiest mud around so that she can lie down in it. Lovely, huh?

Doggie pics are nice : ) I hope a better wave of luck comes your way you've had your share of the bad.

Let me guess. You don't have any pristine white sofas in your house, right? :) I'm so sorry to hear of your hand injury. What a BUMMER. Maybe this is a good time to go on a reading marathon. Hope your hand heals fast!

Phooey about the hand injury! Must redirect the urge to knit to other knitting like activities like reading or blogging. Feel better.

OH NO!!!! Poor mary! I had an avulsion fracture in my ankle about 13 years ago, unfortunate sledding incident.....:)
Feel better! And go Katy! She knows where the fun is! Maybe a mud treatment will help the hand. Can't hurt!!
Now, go ice it.

Mary, I am so sorry! Is it your non-dominant hand (at least, I hope). Treat yourself to some good videos or books or books on tape. Sending healing thoughts your way.... hands are important!

My son has the same ability to find the ickies mud!

Oh I'm so sorry to read this entry. I know you must be going nuts. Wishes for a speedy recovery your way.

oh no! Quelle disastre! Here's hoping for a speedy recovery! To put your injury in a Pollyanna-ish light: the good thing about hurting your hand is that you can read lots of books without feeling bad that you're not knitting.

Posted by: Stephanie VW on 08.30.2004 AT 10:48 AM

Yikes! Hope the damage turns out to be less than you expect - sounds like this is the perfect excuse to do some reading about knitting :)

Posted by: Donna on 08.30.2004 AT 10:51 AM

Oh NO!!!! And I know the first thoughts to your mind were "How will I cook or clean the bathroom, or vacuum or fold laundry ?"----NOT! If you are anything like me, your first thoughts went to knitting and your excercise routine. Priorities. Recover quickly, I know from personal experience how discouraging this is. Take the time to write a book. You have tons of experience and talent to share........

owww, I hope it heals quickly!

I think my kids would like hanging out with Katy--they are drawn to puddles of mud as well!

I'm so sorry about the hand! It's so aggravating when things like that happen -- they interfere with important stuff.
My Sasha was a genius at finding mud to lie in. The worst was the day she lay down in a puddle of sticky red Georgia clay. It took 20 minutes with the hose outside just to get MOST of the mud off her!

Oh NO! Poor Injured Mary. I hope the news is good and you'll be healing quickly.

Ruh-roh. Sorry you're banged up! That sucks! Especially for those of us with busy hands! Hope you get better soon. Love Katy's pictures--she's such a doll :-)

Best wishes on the healing. While healing (and having to lay off the sticks), maybe you will treat us to more photos? Hope so! Take care.

So sorry to hear about your hand. Yikes! How painful.. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

OH NO ~ your poor hand and right now just as Autumn is approaching! I wish you a speedy recovery and hope that you can still spin! Take care.

At least the dog is having fun! Mine would be in 7th heaven.
Too bad about your hand!! Good thoughts of quick healing are coming your way. Maybe you'll have to just aquire supplies for the day you can get back to knitting and spinning. Shopping, reading, sit back and enjoy...you can do little else. ((((((HUG))))))

yikes! sending healing thoughts your way.

Oh, ouch! Thoughts of healing to you, and please do not follow Katy into the mud. :)

Posted by: Rachael on 09.01.2004 AT 08:49 PM

soooo sorry to hear about your accident, honey. I hope it turns out to be less severe and that you heal quickly.
