08.25.2004 :: Scraps

a little bit of this and that

This picture is of the tiny amount of single-ply that was left over from my spinning this weekend. The little ball on the right is a little bit of leftover single-ply that I navajo plied.

During this last spinning project, I didn't plan the distribution of my spun yarn very well. This was okay, since I was experimenting a bit and used up almost all of the single-ply with the skein of three-ply that I spun. I still had a little bit leftover, which I use to practice navajo plying.

Apparently these little sessions of navajo plying are not paying off as I'm still not very good at the technique. One thing I found is that the single-ply should have a good amount of twist in it, otherwise it will break quite readily while navajo plying.

And as Elaine pointed out, it's best not to overply while Navajo plying to ensure that the resulting yarn has some softness and loft. That's what I am working on.

I haven't quite got the Navaho plying down yet either. When I was in spinning class we had a teacher demonstration and it looked easy enough. She did stress that you should spin slowly. Sure enough, at a later date I strut up to my wheel and give it a try. Arms flailing all over the place trying to make big loops it seemed the wheel was taking me for a ride. Oh it was a mess. I haven't stepped up to bat since!
