08.22.2004 :: Yarning!

Remember this roving?

roving_fire.jpg

I dyed this in the crockpot back in May. It's been slow going on spinning this up, but I finally finished it this weekend.

bobbin and bundles

In progress - above is one bobbin and some of the little pre-drafted bundles of fiber that are ready for spinning.

two skeins

The top skein is a two-ply version of the yarn from this roving. I was worried about plying it too tightly and as a result I ended up with a very loosely plied skein. I wasn't thrilled with it, so I decided to spin a three-ply yarn for the second skein.

Since one of my bobbins had more single-ply on it than the other, I wound that one off into a center-pull ball. I then plied the second skein using both ends of the ball and the single-ply from the second bobbin. It worked out quite nicely and I like the resulting yarn much better than the yarn in the first skein.

Here's a close-up of the three-ply. I like the shape of the yarn and I also like how the different colors get more mixed up in the yarn.

There was one other problem that I noticed while plying this yarn. I couldn't help but notice that long segments of this yarn remind me of these dog treats!

My next step is to knit up some swatches to get an idea of how the yarn looks "in production".

Whoa! it's beautiful! I am so envious of your spinning ability! And I never would have thought of the gnawsome treats if you hadn't mentioned them :-)

OMG that fiber is awesome! If I could steal it right on the page I would! I'd love to see it in a scrumptious shawl. IT would be heavenly. Thank you for always sharing your wonderful dyings and yarn photos. I'm always coveting the results truly!

Those colors are wonderful! I especially love the tweediness of the 3-ply.

If I were a construction worker, than that yarn would most definitely be a pretty woman and so I have to WHISTLE! Make that a long and admiring whistle. Hot stuff, there.
