From all I have read here, you have given Spencer the best life a dog could ask for. Lots of fun days hiking and swimming, filled with treats and love. I am praying that the memories that make you sad now, will be the ones that soon bring a smile.

I am so, so sorry. Their lives are too short for the love we have to give them.
Posted by: Janice in GA on 10.31.2004 AT 10:37 AM
First of all Mary, would you straighten Sandy out on the names? Clearly she thinks all dogs look alike. ;)
Oh Mary. Oh Spencer. You gave him a wonderful life and he is a fantastic dog. (In no small part to your loving care.) I will always remember the smooches he tried to give me and that soulful look in his eyes. The hardest part of loving is letting go . . .
Hugs to you both.

I'm sure Spencer is waiting for you at the Rainbow Bridge. http://www.rainbowbridge.org/

What a lucky dog to have had such a great mom. One who loved him and did everything she could for him. My heart does out to you. I know how hard it is. I wish you strength and peace. He'll be at the Bridge waiting for you.

Mary and Katy --
So sorry for your loss. Great dogs are a special gift given to us to appreciate and love with the same unbounded love they have for us. Such wonderful memories you'll hold of Spencer will keep him alive in your heart forever. My Major is and he died nearly 40 years ago now, but I can still see his wonderful brown eyes, the cock of his head and the joy he felt when he saw me coming home. I look forward to seeing them again, as I'm sure you do to seeing Spencer.
Hugs and comfort to you.

I'm so sorry Mary! I've found that writing a tribute at the message board at http://petloss.com was helpful for me in the past when I've lost beloved pets.
Take good care of yourself and give Katy lots of hugs today.

My sympathies, Mary! We are all thinking about you.

Oh, I'm soo-sooo sorry to hear about your loss...I just lost my Sally Aug. 30...I'm sure my furbaby will be glad to play with yours. Rainbow bridge...however hard it was helped me grieve...I'm so sorry and I know how hard it is and I know at this time nothing really helps (nor should it) The thought that I was so blessed to know my furbabies love is what helped me through....so sorry...
Posted by: PJ on 11.01.2004 AT 11:28 AM
They are so much more than 'only dogs', they are our best freinds and the unconditional love they give to us helps us to keep hope alive.
Posted by: margene on 11.01.2004 AT 11:41 AM
Mary, words seem like such clumsy things at times like this. I know I can't write words to comfort you — I know someone couldn't comfort me...just remembere that memories won't ever go away. The love you feel for him in your heart won't go away.
My thoughts and prayers are with you!

Mary, I'm sad for your loss of Spencer. I'll be thinking of you and Katy.

How brave you were to let him go with dignity. Never is a love so unconditional as that given by our animal companions. I'm sorry for your loss.
Posted by: Paula on 11.01.2004 AT 04:07 PM
Your quote is so true. You can never be prepared to feel depth of the sorrow of loss. I am very saddened by your loss [writing in tears] and send you all my sympathies.

I am so so sorry to hear your beautiful Spencer has died. You photos of him are beautiful and we can see how much you love him. Please take care of yourself and Katy.

Peace and comfort to you and your family. It's so hard to lose a good friend. Spencer was obviously a lucky guy to have people who cared so much about him.
When my dad's long time companion, Gandy, left this world, he bought a beautiful Pagoda Dogwood and planted it near the house with a small marker he engraved himself "To my best friend". The tree's done well, and we figure Gandy must be watching over it.
Posted by: Theresa on 11.01.2004 AT 07:39 PM
Oh Mary -
I don't think dogs are ever "only dogs". A person who loves their dog, thinks of the dog as a member of the family and grieves when that dog's time on earth is done will not have been the caretaker of "only a dog", they will have had the incredible good fortune of having been a companion to a loyal, honest and true friend.
I'm sorry for the loss of your friend. I'm sure he will be welcomed into Heaven will barks and wagging tails. ('cause If Heaven is a place without dogs, then I don't think I want to go).

My first visit here, and such a sad occasion.
My lab Lily died last month. One of the sweetest comments someone left was, "she's still there, you just can't see her anymore." I found that very comforting.
