01.20.2005 :: Fashion. Turn to the Left.

la,la,la,la,lah,lah,lah,lah..fashion. turn to the left!

I love the show Project Runway. It's one of the only shows that falls outside of my standard police, detective, investigation style of show that I generally watch.

Have you seen it?

I think the reason that I enjoy the show so much is that it reminds of my years in college. I was in a competitive BFA program - I think the numbers were something like 120 freshman start the program, and about 12 to 20 people graduate from that initial class. Twenty people a year would be alot. We were always given off the wall projects and had to figure out creative solutions.

Getting graded on creativity is tough. It's very subjective and the grades given in a class were often simply a matter of the teacher's taste. I had come out of a math and science program where you were either right or wrong. Each is hard in it's own way.

Anyway - I think Project Runway is an awful lot of fun. I loved Austin's dress that he made out of corn husks. Though it did look much better before it wilted. I think it's going to come down to Jay or Kara (and I'd put my money on Kara). I think they're just keeping Wendy around because it's always interesting to have a total b%$ch "in the house"!

And, just one more reason to love Tivo. I can forward through all of the repetitive flashback scenes and drama-building moments and focus on the process that the designers use - and the finished projects. Most excellent!

I don't know why but I thought you are a product of a English major from an Ivy League school
Wish you could have a heart to heart with Carrie. She is doing very well but most of her grades are from creativity graded classes and it really is all a matter of teachers taste and instruction. I think she realizes she has to have a finger on the teacher's pulse all the time just to stay clear about what is to be done. Alot of the other students just simply don't get it so her class numbers are going down also.
I think your a fashion lover so you liking Project Runway is no surprise. : ) Get the popcorn and enjoy!

I had to read this through a couple of times . . . this is Mary speaking?!? Lady, you never cease to amaze me. I'm sooooo out of touch, I've never even heard of this show. Will have to tune in. (And get Tivo!) You crack me up. :)

So nice to see you're back!
1. That doggie photo deserves some major award.
2. Glad to know someone has a Volvo that is older than mine (1997).
3. Lovely mitten - you had that yarn on hand??

I caught the first episode of Project Runway by chance, and I have been completely hooked since then. (I don't tell many people - it's hard to explain really liking what seems like a cheesy show from the outside!) I'm not even particularly into fashion, and I love this show, for many of the reasons you listed. Jay, Kara, and Austin are my top three (and they do seem to be the top designers anyway) - Austin struggles compared to the other two, but, man, when he's on and comfortable with the style, he is good.

If you don't already know this, Bravo's website for the program has a section for each episode called "Tim's Take" (Tim is the professor-ly guy who helps out the designers) where he talks about what just happened. I love his inside look and very scholarly and observent opinions, and he's clever and fairly humorous to boot.
