02.14.2005 :: Mittens

From this:

Yarn

to these:

soft and warm

The Ravenheart roving made just a small skein of yarn and I was immensely curious about how it would knit up. I was surprised by the strip-i-ness, but by this point, I really shouldn't be. I like the mittens, but I think I would have preferred a more subtle shift of colors between the stripes. That's why the Lorna's Laces roving from yesterdays post will definitely be plied from three seperate bobbins (rather than navajo plying).

I want to know Adrian's secret - how to get "heathery" stripes in a two ply yarn?

Those. Mittens. Rock.

They make me itchy to afford/order the spinning wheel I picked out, just so I can be a copycat and try to make yarn and mittens so beautiful!

I like that the stripes change harshly (if thats what you would call it). They are lovely!

I love the way the mittens turned out! One of these days I'm going to have to learn to spin...just what I need, another hobby! LOL

I think the striping is perfect! It blends just right from one color to the next. If I could buy that yarn I would.

WOW! What a difference between the yarn and the knitted fabric! It always amazes me, and that's why it is so much fun. I'm glad you are blogging about knitting again! Very inspirational.

LOVE the mittens! The colors are such fun - perfect for a cold dreary day. I am amazed that you spun the yarn yourself - it is beautiful. The pups are pretty darn cute, too! ;)

Wow, from yarn to mittens! :-)
I like the colors and the stripes, wish I had something similar going on her. I need mittens!

You have a great blog, I really like your pictures! Makes me want to go knit now!

Those are lovely. Pardon me while I nip off to set fire to all my spinning.

I love, love, love, your mittens. BTW...I learned first hand that all spinning wheels are not the same.

Those mittens are great!

Okay, the secret!

1. Small areas of color on white wool make a heathered effect.
2. Small areas of color instead of long sections make for a shorter repeat.

I strip my wool rovings/top into thin strips before spinning, too. This also helps.

This wool has just short sections of colors and white: http://www.helloyarn.com/wallpaper.jpg

Looked like this spun:
