02.17.2005 :: Granola and Kitty

Have you ever had one of those food experiences which seem almost impossible to duplicate? I had one at a little restaurant in Hyannis, MA about four years ago. We stopped for breakfast and had the most delicious granola that I've ever tasted. This granola has haunted me since that day - it was that wonderful.
I find that most granola recipes are too spicy. But, while laying on the couch, recovering from a February cold, I spotted a nice simple recipe from the Barefoot Contessa (I left out all of the dried fruit and added raw pumpkin seeds and a little brown sugar). I've got a batch cooking in the oven right now (I burned the first batch). I'll let you know how it turns out - it's certainly beautiful to look at!
Given all of the pictures that I post of the dogs, you may be surprised that I also have two cats. My kitties are pretty camera shy - but what do you know - sweet Miss Frances decided to pose for me the other day. She's beautiful!

Miss Frances is very good to pose like that. Did she run as the flash went off, my Westie has a benny when that happens. Your mittens are gorgeous by the way, oh how I want to spin yarn like you!

Miss Frances is indeed a beautiful Kitty. Kaity thinks she must be related to her cat Pretty. They do look alike.

Is that restaurant still open? They may share the recipe! But I love the Contessa! She generally doesn't stear you wrong.

You're quite right. I thought your house was a cat-free zone. Miss Frances is indeed lovely!

I just made some granola yesterday! How freaky. I kind of burned mine, too, but I decided to just pretend I like my granola with a smoky hint.

Mmmm...granola. I actually have used a recipe that Sandy posted a few times and love it. I love the Barefoot Contessa (do you watch her show on the Food Channel?), so I'll have to try this recipe.

I love the photo of your cat!! Being a cat person married to a dog person........we have dogs, but I soooooo miss having a cat curled up on my pillow. One of these days..............

Mary, as everyone says, you take wonderful photos. When your blog first popped onto my screen I thought, "wow, look at the beautifully dried hydrangea." Then the individual oat flakes came into focus (mine, not the computer's). There does seem to be just a hint of green in there that I must have mistaken for leaves. Anyway, beautiful.
I also wanted to tell you might want to put "Sight Hound," by Pam Houston, on your reading list. It's a novel that examines the deep bond of love between a woman and her Irish Wolfhound. It's told from both the human and animal point of view. It's beautiful, too, but a caveat since you so recently lost Spencer: It deals with the wolfhound's battle against cancer and his courage and deep love of his human.

I'm getting really, really jealous of your photos - but don't stop - they are so lovely. Inspirational in fact. Maybe tomorrow I'll take something good.
Really, both are perfect in their own way! Thank you for sharing them.
PS - Love the off center of both of them - too many people want that middle of the picture look - I love to go off center! This - http://www.pbase.com/caramou/image/28411949 - is one of my favorites! Thanks again. C
