06.04.2005 :: 700 Acres all to ourselves! (well, mostly)

Non-swimmer on the left. Wet, moldy dog on the right.

A late spring vacation in the hills of upstate New York. The doggies accompanied me to a beautiful 70 acre property. The house, land and lake that I rented was surrounded by 600 acres that is owned by someone from out of state who rents it for hunting in the fall. It was very peaceful.

Picture from the top of the property. So quiet and remote!

The pond was at the top of the property. The view in the picture above is from the lake, looking down towards the house and barn. A little bit of trivia that I learned from the local guy who takes care of the house...it used to be a sheep farm!

Swimming in the pool, swimming is cool...

Our days were spent kicking back by the pond, hiking the local hills and getting lots of sleep.

While up in NY, I took Katy to another herding seminar. The lady teaching the seminar was extremely patient with dear Katy. She also had a dry sense of humor and politely mentioned to Katy that, "it's hard to look innocent with wool in your mouth!" It's becoming apparent that Katy is not so interested in herding the sheep, but more interested in harassing the sheep. She actually got bopped in the head by one of the rams! Fortunately, both Katy and the ram have hard heads and both walked away without injury.

Hey Katy! Cut it out! That is too funny, Mary. Though I bet you held your breath until you knew she was ok. Glad you had a peaceful time. What a pretty piece of property!

Sounds wonderful, and the woofies look very happy, indeed! Have you read Jon Katz's "On Bedlam Farm," about his attempt at running a sheep farm with his border collies in upstate NY? Such a nice book (though I admit I liked "A Dog's Year" a little better).

Oh well, you need a fleece every now and again don't you? ;)

oooohhh... Happy doggies! So cute! Wool in mouth, Katy? That sounds like the-cat-who-ate-the-canary smile!

I don't know what it is, but the closer I get (59 days!) to turning 30 the more I just want to live a simple life in a beautiful place like that. I'm very jealous. :)

BTW..I wanted to ask you about your drum carder, but I can't find your email address. I sold my Fricke Finest (wasn't that Frickin' stupid?) and now I wish I hadn't, so I'm plotting to get a new carder. I don't need a Finest again, so I'm torn between the Fricke Petite and the Ashford. How satisfied are you with your Ashford and do you just use it primarily for blending?

That is interesting - I had no idea about dogs, trainers, sheeps.... Nice pictures too. Thanks for sharing.
