12.18.2005 :: Ruffles

rufflesone.jpg

I'm making the Ruffles scarf from Scarf Style. The yarn is Tahki Shannon in Color #11. I'm using three balls and have just started working on the third ball.

It's turning out pretty nice and so that I don't have to keep turning the scarf over, I've learned to knit backwards. I've always wanted to learn, but until now have not had a good enough reason to practice. Now, I'm getting lots of practice! And I can see that it's a good skill to have. Amazingly, my regular knit rows and my backward knit rows are the same gauge!

Bonus information (but not information you will need unless you have a dog...)

I found this link to a special product that makes scooping poop a bit less unpleasant.

If you don't mind me sharing, I'll let you in on a little secret. Dog's who eat raw, don't have the problem that this product is designed to fix. It's a wonderful thing that happens when a dog is no longer eating overly processed, grain-based kibble.

I could go in to more detail, but I'll spare you! Let's just say that raw food is nature's poop freeze - it's a beautiful thing!

I'm currently feeding the dogs a variety of food from Three Cheers. Lately, the variety has been beef, rabbit, sheep or venison - with a little raw tripe and plain yogurt thrown in for a treat. Lots of bones for chewing and my doggies are happy, have beautifully soft fur, bright white teeth and lots of energy! I highly recommend making the change.

And a little dog treat zen for good measure:

You know, there used to be a spray-on product for electronics that did spot-chill/freeze like that. I bet it would work too, if it's still available.

Your scarf is nice. The yarn looks quite pretty, very different from what I've seen others using for that pattern.
As for the raw dog food, our dogs and two visiting dogs have been dragging raw venison, bones, and bits of hide out of the woods for a couple days now. The deer was probably taken down by a mountain lion that has been sited nearby recently.
We saw ravens circling around above the woods nearby, but I'm too chicken to go and investigate any further. Mountain lions are nocturnal and after they kill an animal, they tend to leave it and come back to feed on it over several days. The dogs have been barking like crazy off in that direction at night.
Our dogs occasionally score such finds so they're handling it pretty well, but the new dogs, well, lets just say that it's rocking their digestive systems! It was interesting reading about the gradual introduction of raw foods into a pet's diet at the website you linked to.

Gosh I love that face on the right (is that Ellie?). It clearly says, "You can't be SERIOUS! can you?"

I taught myself to knit backwards for Ruffles, too. It saved my wrist a lot of pain. Yours looks lovely in that gorgeous yarn.

It's so extra pitiful when they drool while waiting for their food!

Ruffles is lovely in that colorway! I really need to learn to knit backwards.

Your ruffles looks very nice in that yarn. I like your selection of colors for this scarf. Keep up the good work. I learned how to knit backwards when I took an entrlec class some time ago.

That yarn is incredible! So colorful. It reminds me of that Ravenheart stuff that you spun up a while back.

How amusing would it be to see someone spraying dog feces. Just visually that cracks me up. Ruffles is a beut...and I think everyone I know that's made it, has learned to knit backwards.

Hmmm, I will have to try that backwards knitting at some point. I also want to learn intarsia, but have trouble knitting continental. I'm an english knitter and everything I've read says it's easier to knit with yarn in both hands. So I've got some learning to do.

I think that's a great pattern! And I love your choice of yarn...now this knitting backwards thing. I'm going to have to check into it!

Gorgeous yarn! I learned to knit backwards this year. Although it took me awhile to get it, it does come in awfully handy sometimes.

As always, I'm in awe of your photographic skill. I hope you had happy holidays and are doing well.

BTW, you've been tagged! There is a fun game of blog tag going on. When you get tagged, you have to post your five weirdest habits on your blog and then tag five other people. I've actually been enjoying going around to read the weird habits of my friends!

Happy New Year!

I just finished that scarf for an Xmas gift and I never thought of knitting backwards (I didn't even dig out circular needles for the project so I had humungous long needles sticking out from a few stitches. Since I read your post I found out how fun it is to knit backwards. Thanks!!

I love the yarn you're using for that scarf! I tried that scarf but gave up because I didn't find it fun to knit. Maybe I need to learn to knit backwards! I love your dog pictures! I have a hard time taking pictures of my guy because he has ADD and rarely sits still!

I learned knitting backwards this morning for short-row heels. I have a question for you from deep in your archives (back in 2002), but couldn't find an e-mail address on your site, so I'll ask here. When you made a short-row heel in heel stitch, did it come out much shorter than your usual short-row heel? I tried it and mine came out much shorter than my usual heel and it didn't fit well. I suspect vertical compression in the stitch is the problem, and am trying to suss out whether there are some compensating changes I need to make to adjust for it.
